Over the last few years we have all been aware at how 'greener' measures are being introduced into our daily lives; from the recycling within a home to the plans to reduce carbon dioxide levels across the breadth of a country. Technology has also of course appeared to help this plight and 'electric cars' have become less of a novelty but more something we are becoming used to.

However how do they really fare for the average person? Do they help save you money as well as the environment around us?

Money in your pocket
Like most things in life, there are two sides to this argument, and there will be different experiences from people depending on where they may live or any problems they may have experienced.

Negatives
Outlay & depreciation - the initial outlay for an electric car (or more likely, a hybrid car) is higher than you would pay for a regular car (regarding performance etc). This is due to the new technology used in the cars and that there isn't widespread demand in the consumer market. Depreciation is also a factor to consider. It is dramatically higher than that of a regular petrol car and therefore means that you stand to make a large loss if you look to sell on.

Technology - with the technology used being new, there is a cost attached. There are also long term considerations that we will see arise - cost of replacement engines, cost of battery replacements, how this effects insurance premiums etc. Of course the more widespread they become, the cheaper this will become, however it may reduce what can be done in the garage at home and that still acts as a deterrent to some.

Positives
Efficiency - one of the great selling points is that a hybrid or electric car will run more efficiently than a petrol car giving not only better performance for your money, but lower bills too. This is of course over the long term, so one of the ways to make an electric car work for you is to hold on to it! However the earliest cars have been out for over a decade now, so we can start to understand how the savings work.

Subsidies - depending on where you live, you could find yourself receiving benefits for owning a hybrid or electric card. For example, in London you will have exclusion from the congestion charges that many face, so a daily drive to London would be considerably cheaper. As mentioned previously, you will also save on fuel bills too with the cost of the fuel being that much cheaper.

The world around us
This is an area that has many shades of grey and can be argued at length on both sides. Of course in a hybrid car, it's only the electric part of it we are dealing with, yet that in itself is not a straight forward case of 'being green'.

Using electricity as a fuel of course means we use less fossil fuels (and therefore cut down the CO2 created by them) while driving, however does this meant it solves our problem? Well according to studies, the production of the cars and their electrical engines mean that there is a high production of fine particles emitted. It has also been shown that when driven, a per mile comparison to a fossil fuel powered car shows that electrical pollution could be greater. This is because you have to take into account the entire lifespan of the vehicle - from production of materials to the power plant that creates and feeds the electricity.

However this can be outweighed by lifespan of the car and by further demand for it. When electricity companies use more renewable energy, the carbon footprint of an electrical car will reduce greatly.

Auto Repairs Should Be Done by Professionals

Most people, at some point in time have car trouble. It is a reality that many people dread having to deal with. They don't just dread this circumstance because of the inconvenience it causes, but this feeling is also the result of their seemingly limited financial supply. Ferrari Classic Cars Past and Present Making the News

The supreme luxury sports car marque Ferrari is never far from making news headlines, whether it is the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 racing team or, say, their ever popular sports cars like the Ferrari 458, winning even more automotive accolades than you can shake a stick at. One thing is for sure - the Ferrari cars, and the brand as a whole, has always been evocative.

Even from their humble beginnings at the start of the 20th century by their founder and automotive engineer Enzo Ferrari, the company owes much to its racing roots and heritage. The Maranello based super car manufacturer has long been synonymous with the motor racing world, especially as Ferrari is the oldest Grand Prix team in the world.

Ferrari F620

This month was the time when Ferrari chose to announce their new successor for the hugely popular Ferrari 599, the all-new F620. The Ferrari F620 has got a hard act to follow, as the 599 has been a great success for the Maranello based company. This new car is expected to feature the same V12 engine which has also been used in the company's newly released Ferrari FF all-wheel-drive model.

The engine that will feature in the F620, however, is rumoured to have a higher power output engine that will deliver an amazing 700bhp, which is nearly 50 more bhp than the FF model.

Ferrari 250 GTO

Also in the recent news was the auction sale of a rare 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, which ended up selling for an epic £20.2million (or $32 million) by the auctioneer's company Talacrest, who specialise in luxury cars.

The 250 GTO is a legend and is widely regarded as one of the World's most sought after Ferrari's. Only 39 250 GTOs were ever produced from 1962 - 1964 and this particular 250 GTO was believed to be sold by its private English owner and alleged to have been bought by an unknown buyer from Spain.

250 GTOs are powered by a 3.0-litre V12 engine, which produces 300hp, allowing this special car to be able to achieve 0-60mph acceleration in a mere 6.1 seconds and 174mph as its staggering top speed. This is very impressive, even by today's standards, and especially so for a sports car produced in the early 60s.


The 2013 Ferrari California

This week, the company with the logo of the 'Prancing Horse' has just announced the replacement for the current Ferrari California model will be unveiled at the 2013 International Geneva Motor Show in the Swiss city of Geneva. The Italian sports car company have announced that the all-new luxury Grand Tourer will be more powerful, lighter and feature a new "handling speciale" package.

Why Are Diesel Cars More Expensive Than Gasoline Ones?

Modern diesel engines rely on some advanced technologies, many of which are more expensive than standard components for gasoline engines.

The most basic characteristic of diesels that allow them to be more efficient than gasoline engines is the compression ratio. While most gasoline engines have compression ratios in the range of 9:1 to 11:1, diesel engines can have 16:1 or even 20:1. The higher the compression ratio, the higher the efficiency, according to the laws of thermodynamics. Unfortunately, higher compression ratios also mean higher stress for the engine internals to cope with. Therefore all the parts of a diesel engine have to be made stronger to withstand those stresses over the lifetime of the engine. This of course means that a diesel engine will cost more in comparison to a gasoline engine.

The vast of majority of diesel engines for passenger cars are turbocharged, in order to produce competitive amounts of power. While a turbocharger gives diesel engines a great flat torque curve and strong power, it increases costs. The cost for the turbo itself is not the end of the story though. Since compressing the air using a turbocharger heats it up, it has to be cooled down again before being fed into the engine. This means the car needs an intercooler and the associated plumbing as well, again more costs.

Another key component of modern diesel engines is a high pressure injection system. These systems, more commonly known as "common rail" systems, pump the fuel up to very high pressures between 1000 and 2000 bars or even more. Because of this, a diesel car has to have a secondary fuel pump to achieve those high pressures, again more costs. Once the pressurized fuel is pumped into the common-rail, it is injected into the cylinders usually by using what is known as a piezo-injector. This is an injector that delivers very precise amounts of diesel using a piezo-crystal. The advantage of these injectors is the very flexible and precise delivery of fuel, which allows very good control over the combustion, allowing good economy and low emissions. The disadvantage is of course that they are expensive.


While high compression ratios are great for efficiency, combustion at high compression ratios also has some unwanted side effects. They tend to cause the formation of nitrogen oxides, or NOx. There are strict limits for NOx emissions in all legislative drive cycles, therefore the car manufacturers must reduce these emissions using exhaust after treatment systems. In comparison to a gasoline car, which usually would have just an ordinary three way catalyst for after treatment, a diesel car would (depending on the size) need in addition a catalyst to reduce NOx emissions. Another emission that diesel engines produce is particles, which also need to be handled by diesel particle filters.

All of these are additional costs that diesel engines have to put up with, and that is why they are more efficient but also more expensive than their gasoline counterparts.
